NAME: Katara
CANON: Avatar: The Last Airbender (CRAU)
CANON POINT: The Search; Post-comic
AGE: 16-17 (canon); 18-19 (mentally); 19 (physically)
BACKGROUND: Canon, CRAU Development: Zodion/Ophichus, CRAU: Noteworthy Character Relationships. OOC'ly I'll work with other players to treat all CR as fresh unless someone specifically apps in another Z/O CRAU or requests Katara retain knowledge of their character.
Game Development
During Katara's time in service to the Twelve she became worlds more open to certain concepts and ideals than she ever would have if left to her own devices. She considered herself adaptable and flexible as a master waterbender should be, but when faced with new trials she discovered just how much more room she had left to grow. During her fourteen months in-game she was made to step back and what reevaluate her priorities and beliefs.
Naturally because of the mature themes of the game some of Katara's core values and personal morals were challenged on a monthly basis. She found herself sometimes asking the question that was once only a fleeting notion, quickly squashed and quieted before. How far was she willing to go to protect herself and the people she loved? There was always a clear cut line before, but not so, there.
If she were to put aside her outrage over being abdupted and manipulated, for the most part Katara considered Zodion and Ophiuchus to be extraordinary and positive detour, if just for the people she met and things she was able to experience. There was such a naturally easy going air about the place in Ourana that it was difficult to remember at times that their presence and their actions were meant to protect not just ZODION, but their own worlds as well. Even the Twelve were constantly encouraging their followers to take the time to stop and smell the roses. Regardless, Katara remained skeptical for the entire first month of her stay.
She was thrown head first into worship at the end of the first month. Her first encounter was a double-hit with both week-four aphrodisiac and the influence of the Twelve's meddling, which influenced both Katara and her partner into very aggressive states. The combination led to a consensual, but rough and demanding first dive into sex. Even though she held no resentment towards the other person and they made the most of it, they also both acknowledged that it was less than ideal. She ultimately found it jarring to have her mindset and emotions toyed with so easily, and in the end it colored her opinion of the whole concept in both negative and positive ways for a while.
From it, she learned that the Twelve's influence could strike at any time and that it wasn't something that could be ignored. She was unnerved by her own lack of control, but more so at how drastically their influence could alter people's personalities. She struggled intensely between guilt and a rising sense of hopelessness of her circumstances afterwards as that sunk in, but rather than breaking under the pressure Katara chose to take matters into her own hands, to adapt and exercise whatever control over the situation that she could. Rather than just seeking out people to "use" she formed friendships naturally during her stay and then willingly turned to them for help when she needed to worship, most of the time anyway. She went into the next encounter with a clear head and so did her partner, but it ended up being even worse.
Where her first experience was fueled by aphrodisiacs and the push of aggression this second encounter was all Katara, and all her partner. Both of them were inexperienced and terribly awkward, and to make matters worse her partner was Shikamaru Nara, who isn't exactly known for being the most motivated. He really just wasn't into it, and though it was no direct fault of her own (since they'd both agreed to it) her confidence took a major hit. It turned out for the better, in a roundabout way, as it turned into a learning experience. Katara worked up the nerve to ask one of the first people she'd met for advice. This person was kind enough to take it a step further and came by to give her actual lessons, let's call it. Their guidance left her in a much better place, mentally and emotionally. Three entirely different experiences- how's the saying goes? Third time's the charm?
After that Katara's outlook on sex finally took a turn for the better. Not every encounter went well or was even voluntary, but the boost in confidence definitely had a lasting effect. She'd finally found her stride and figured out how best to adapt, and as she became more comfortable with the idea of sex she found it actually brought her closer to some of her friends instead of making things awkward. It became another way of helping people, of strengthening bonds with the people she loved, and she came to enjoy the act simply for the sake of enjoying it once she had a few months under her belt, discovering a sensuality she didn't know she had.
Katara's second major point of personal growth was the struggle she faced in finding a balance between her "real" life and her life with the Twelve. The main catalyst for that conundrum was her relationship with Zuko in specific. It was always complicated, start to finish, but always platonic. In Ourana they found that adding in the element of sex really began to blur the line between the type of bond they shared, platonic or romantic?
She had to come to terms with having sex to maintain her senses (she still didn't like it but she came to terms with it), she could even deal with the Twelve's ridiculous pranks. What was difficult to come to grips with was discovering how easily their entire lives could be flipped overnight.
Zuko was familiar, and the only person from her world, and he was there almost from the start of it all. Naturally they eventually became regular worship partners during his early months in the city. Katara was still in a point of turmoil over her feelings for Aang at the time she and the two were allowed to focus on their relationship without the constant presence of the others in the mix. It was confusing and messy and Katara had to learn to accept the complicated reality of their situation, that at any time things could change back home that would have lasting consequences on her life in game. Even after her last stay Katara was still trying to learn how to come to grips with living two separate lives and what she'd do if those lives ever came into direct conflict.
Life on Ophiuchus was more her speed. There were elements of her previous stint with the Twelve, but this time around she was part of the crowd trying to restore life to the planet, and the act of worship became more essential than ever. They lacked many, many of the creature comforts (like soap and clean beds) that Ourana had offered, and an easy 90% of Katara's CR was gone. Thankfully she already had a full year under her belt of dealing with the gods, so she managed to approach the matter of worship with surprising objectivity, though still some measure of guilt.
She gained a great many friends and valuable lessons, even new skills during her stay. Overall I'd say that it made her just a bit more rounded.
PERSONALITY: Katara, in summary, is resourceful, compassionate, hopeful, protective, passionate, and determined, but she can also be stubborn, short sighted, opinionated, hypocritical, and spiteful. She's undergone a great many trials despite her relatively young age, and matured into a strong and confident woman to show for it.
For a hundred years the war has raged, with only the Northern Water Tribe, Omashu, Ba Sing Sei, and pockets of areas the Fire Nation hasn't cared to occupy managing to stand against the Fire Nation's march for conquest. Her mother was brutally killed by a soldier from the Fire Nation, a fact that has always haunted Katara, and the avatar, the only one who might be able to END all of this suffering disappeared over one hundred years before. Despite all of this she remained filled with quiet hope until the day that she and Sokka uncovered Aang's iceberg. Since then that hope has burned as bright as a beacon and served to hold their family together through the course of the war. Even at her lowest Katara can always manage to pick herself back up and find hope with the help of friends.
Beyond the Gaang Katara deeply and fiercely about people, be they family, friends, her tribe, or just people in need. She can’t stand to see others suffer and will willingly dive headlong into danger to help them.
She’s so completely loyal and devoted to the well being of the people around her that she can be overbearing at times. She's often referred to as being "motherly", sometimes detrimentally so such as when Toph starts to feel that Katara is smothering the group. She comes by that organically: Kya's death left a hole in the tribe, one that Katara's paternal grandmother began teaching her to help fill. She took to it so well that even Sokka (the older of the siblings) admits that when trying to remember Kya's face Katara's is the only one he can picture.
She's the first to offer emotional and moral support: hugs, a kind word, encouragement and reassurance, unsolicited advice, or an ear for venting. At times others find her to be overbearing, and though it clearly stems from love she has had to learn to try to dial it back and let things be from time to time.
You know what they say about the road to Hell, though, how it's paved with good intentions. When Katara detours the group Sokka is often the one trying to convince her that she should let things be we have our own problems. His “these people are on their own” attitude clashes with her values and this can lead to her sneaking behind the others backs to do what she thinks should be done. This is because she possesses an uncompromising sense of right and wrong. Also because of these traits she can sometimes be a busybody, inserting herself into other people's problems, heedless of the consequences or if she's been asked to. The trouble she brings on the Gaang is never intentional but also rarely enough to dissuade her from her course once decided.
In a lot of ways Katara demonstrates many of the same qualities as her birth element. The adaptability, the give and take, patience, and persistence... she can be a soothing trickle or she can be a relentless torrent. She has the wisdom to recognize when a problem needs time to solve, and the patience to wear it down over time, but sometimes she focuses too much on the big picture and overlooks the little details. On the surface Katara is polite, caring, and open-minded, someone who believes in fairness and compromise, underneath that is also a cunning warrior with an inner strength and tenacity needed for their guerrilla warfare approach. She can be genuinely apologetic while she’s freezing your hands in place against a wall, or she can give you the cold shoulder while she’s healing a gash on your leg. She's too merciful to leave anyone for dead, and that caring nature may very well move her to help even her enemies, but it doesn't impede her from holding a grudge or disapproving of their actions and choices.
Her resourcefulness also lends her some talent for coming up with elaborate ruses and such, but her do-gooder attitude prevents her from really breaking loose often. Katara is a terrible liar, most of the time, but surprisingly a fairly skilled actress. She may deny having any urge to snoop but the truth is she’ll be right there with you while you dig in another person’s drawers, trying to convince you the whole time that it’s wrong, yet still be unable to walk away for her own curiosity.
Her compassion might be what moves her but her moral compass keeps her on point, treating others with kindness even in situations where it’s not expected of her, and checking loved ones when they step out of line. That being said Katara's moral compass can be skewed at times. She will bend her own values to solve a problem if she thinks something is already in conflict with them. It gets to the point where she can be downright hypocritical, stealing from thieves while openly disapproving of their thievery, for instance. Katara has a long temper but she holds grudges when she feels deeply wronged, and on very rare occasion can get so angry and stubborn that she fails to recognize or dare when she's saying hurtful things to people.
Because she loves so completely she's hurt all the more by acts of betrayal than others. Katara will find a way to move mountains to help you, and breaking her trust is probably the most hurtful thing you could do to her, but it IS possible to earn her forgiveness again in time. Despite experiencing a few betrayals over the course of the series Katara remains true to her beliefs, and ultimately chooses to continue seeing the good in people.
POWERS/ABILITIES: Wiki: Waterbending, Healing, and Bloodbending, or I've typed it up in my own words with examples here for a previous app.
• Bloodbending may or may not need nerfing, which is fine by me if so (and she won't miss it since she didn't have access to it in her previous game/s), but I'd rather leave it to mod discretion for the final decision. At the very least it would very obviously require a section on her permissions/opt-in post, which I will be sure to include if the ability isn't nerfed. Unlike other characters in the series Katara is only capable of bending during a full moon. She isn't inclined to use it but I'd be lying if I said she'd never try, considering the readiness with which she broke it out while looking for Yan Ra.
• Before her stay in Zodion Katara had not mastered bending using the rest of her body. AFTER her stay in Zodion, however, Katara learned the more modern styles of bending from Korra and began studying Zuko and Mako. This doesn't constitute any new powers, but is an expansion of her bending style.
• She also trained in physical hand to hand combat with Prince Tygra and Alphonse Elric, and was mentored in how to "freerun" (hardcore parkour) by Ezio Auditore.
INVENTORY:
• Momo, a flying leemur from her world
• A bag containing some clothes
• Her previous network device
• A hand made bone knife
• A photo album she was gifted by the Twelve
